Weil vs. Da — Two Ways to Say "Because" in German

Quick Rule

Is the reason new information? → weil. Is it already known/obvious? → da. (In everyday speech, "weil" works for both.)

weil vs. da — The Rules

weil

"Weil" introduces new, important reasons — the reason is the news. Typically appears in the second clause. It's the most common way to say "because" in everyday German.

da

"Da" introduces known or obvious reasons — the listener already knows or can guess the reason. Often placed at the beginning of a sentence. More common in formal/written German.

Examples — Side by Side

New reason vs. known reason

Ich bin müde, weil ich schlecht geschlafen habe.

I'm tired because I slept badly. (new info)

Da es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause.

Since it's raining, we'll stay home. (obvious reason)

Same meaning, different emphasis

Sie kommt nicht, weil sie krank ist.

She's not coming because she's sick.

Da sie krank ist, kommt sie nicht.

Since she's sick, she's not coming.

Reason last vs. reason first

Wir nehmen ein Taxi, weil der Bus nicht fährt.

We'll take a taxi because the bus isn't running.

Da der Bus nicht fährt, nehmen wir ein Taxi.

Since the bus isn't running, we'll take a taxi.

Cause → effect order

Er lernt Deutsch, weil er in Berlin arbeitet.

He's learning German because he works in Berlin.

Da er in Berlin arbeitet, lernt er Deutsch.

Since he works in Berlin, he's learning German.

Common Mistakes

Using "da" when announcing surprising news: "Ich habe gekündigt, da ich einen neuen Job habe."

Ich habe gekündigt, weil ich einen neuen Job habe.

The new job is news → use "weil". "Da" implies the listener already knew.

Weil ich kein Geld habe, kaufe ich nichts. (in formal writing)

Da ich kein Geld habe, kaufe ich nichts.

In formal/academic writing, "da" is preferred when the reason opens the sentence.

Thinking weil and da have completely different meanings.

Both mean "because" — the difference is emphasis and formality.

In everyday speech, "weil" works in almost all situations. "Da" is a stylistic choice.

Memory Trick

"weil" = the reason is the headline news. "da" = the reason is already "da" (there) — everyone knows it.
