Müssen vs. Sollen — "Must" vs. "Should" in German

Quick Rule

Is it an absolute must/necessity? → müssen. Is it what you're expected/supposed/advised to do? → sollen.

müssen vs. sollen — The Rules

müssen

"Müssen" means must/have to — strong obligation or necessity. It's something you truly need to do (internal or external force): "Ich muss arbeiten" (I have to work). Negation: "nicht müssen" = don't have to (not forbidden!).

sollen

"Sollen" means should/supposed to — expectation or recommendation from someone else. It's what others expect: "Du sollst das machen" (You're supposed to do that). Used for advice, instructions, and moral obligations.

Examples — Side by Side

Obligation vs. advice

Ich muss morgen arbeiten.

I have to work tomorrow. (no choice)

Ich soll morgen früh aufstehen.

I'm supposed to get up early tomorrow. (doctor's advice)

Necessity vs. recommendation

Du musst zum Arzt gehen.

You must go to the doctor. (urgent necessity)

Du sollst weniger Zucker essen.

You should eat less sugar. (recommendation)

Financial obligation vs. deadline

Wir müssen die Miete bezahlen.

We have to pay the rent. (obligation)

Wir sollen bis Freitag fertig sein.

We're supposed to be finished by Friday. (expectation)

Legal vs. moral

Man muss an der Ampel stehen bleiben.

You must stop at the traffic light. (law)

Man soll immer die Wahrheit sagen.

One should always tell the truth. (moral)

Common Mistakes

Ich muss nicht rauchen. (meaning: I must not smoke)

Ich darf nicht rauchen. (must not) / Ich muss nicht rauchen. (don't have to)

"Nicht müssen" = don't have to (no obligation). "Nicht dürfen" = must not (forbidden). Big difference!

Du sollst das machen! (as a strong command)

Du musst das machen! (strong command)

"Sollen" is weaker — an expectation, not a command. For strong obligation, use "müssen".

Mixing up English "shall" with German "sollen".

"Sollen" can mean "shall" but is mainly used for expectations from others.

"Was soll ich machen?" = "What should I do?" (asking for advice). "Soll ich...?" = "Shall I...?"

Memory Trick

"müssen" = MUST (both have U). "sollen" = SHOULD (someone told you so). müssen = you have no choice. sollen = you should, but could choose not to.
