als vs. wie — The Rules
als
Use "als" for unequal comparisons — when something is more/less/different than something else. Always follows a comparative adjective (größer, besser, schneller).
wie
Use "wie" for equal comparisons — when two things are the same. Used with "so...wie" or "genauso...wie" (as...as).
Examples — Side by Side
Berlin ist größer als München.
Berlin is bigger than Munich.
Berlin ist so groß wie Hamburg.
Berlin is as big as Hamburg.
Er läuft schneller als ich.
He runs faster than me.
Er läuft so schnell wie sie.

Common Mistakes
Berlin ist größer wie München.
Berlin ist größer als München.
After a comparative (größer), always use "als", never "wie". This is the #1 mistake even native speakers make in dialect.
Er ist so groß als sie.
Er ist so groß wie sie.
"so...wie" for equal comparisons. Never "so...als".
Das ist besser wie nichts.
Das ist besser als nichts.
"besser" is comparative → always followed by "als".
Memory Trick
"als" = unequaL (both have an L). "wie" = same (wie = "how" = "how similar").
