The B2 Lesen (Reading) module-especially in Goethe and telc-goes beyond simple comprehension. You must reconstruct logical text flow, fill gaps with context-based vocabulary, and interpret graphics or statistical information.

⭐ 1. TEXTREKONSTRUKTION (Paragraph/Sentence Matching)

Goal: Rebuild logical text structure by inserting missing sentences.

This task tests your ability to recognize:

  • argument flow

  • logical progression

  • synonyms and paraphrasing

  • cohesion markers

  • pronoun references (er, sie, diese, solche…)

  • contrast and continuation signals

🔍 How This Task Works

You get a text with several gaps and a list of sentences. You must decide which sentence fits each gap.

Example gap:

You choose which sentence (1-5) fits.

🎯 Top Strategies for Textrekonstruktion

1. Look for “Ankerwörter” (Anchor Words)

Each missing sentence must connect logically with words around the gap.

Check for:

  • pronouns → _dies, das, sie, er, diese Menschen
    _
  • synonyms → _Müll = Abfall
    _
  • thematic markers → _Recycling, Umwelt, Energie
    _

If a sentence uses a pronoun but the surrounding text doesn’t introduce the noun → that sentence does NOT fit here.

2. Identify the Paragraph Function

Is the paragraph doing any of these?

  • introducing a topic

  • giving an example

  • presenting an argument

  • contrasting two ideas

Match the sentence type to the paragraph type.

3. Watch Signal Words

Match signal words before and after the gap:

4. Eliminate Wrong Options First

Most distractor sentences:

  • change the topic

  • use wrong pronouns

  • don’t match tone

  • don’t match argument flow

Cross them out quickly.

5. Re-read the Reconstructed Text

If the reading becomes smooth, your choices are correct.

If the transition feels unnatural → revise.

⭐ 2. LÜCKENTEXT (Gap-Fill at B2)

Goal: Fill gaps requiring vocabulary, connectors, grammar, or logic understanding.

This is one of the hardest B2 tasks because answers are NOT directly in the text.
You must understand meaning, cohesion, and grammar patterns.

🔍 How to Solve Lückentext Correctly

1. Read the entire text FIRST (skim)

Don’t fill gaps too early.
Understand the topic and argument structure.

2. Identify Gap Type

Ask:

  • Is this gap introducing a reason → weil, denn?

  • Is the author contrasting → doch, jedoch, allerdings?

  • Is the author adding → außerdem, zudem?

  • Is it result-focused → daher, folglich, deshalb?

Recognizing gap category solves 50% of the task.

3. Use the “ABCD Connector Formula”

At B2, 90% of connector gaps fit into:

A - Addition → _außerdem, zudem, zusätzlich
_B - Begründung (reason) → _denn, weil, da
_C - Contrast → _jedoch, allerdings, dagegen, aber
_D - Deswegen (result) → deshalb, daher, folglich

Classify the gap → choose the connector.

4. Check Grammar After the Connector

Especially:

  • **weil/obwohl → verb at end
    **
  • **denn → normal word order
    **
  • **trotzdem → verb second position
    **

Grammar tells you if the connector fits logically.

5. Eliminate Words that Change Meaning

Many distractors may be grammatically correct but wrong in meaning.

Example:
A gap needing contrast might offer deshalb (result) → reject it.

⭐ 3. GRAFIK-/DIAGRAMM-AUFGABEN (Charts, Data & Info Graphics)

Goal: Connect text with quantitative information.

This task often appears in telc B2 and sometimes in Goethe B2 Schreib-/Leseteilen.

🎯 How to Solve Grafik-Interpretation Tasks

1. Read Titles, Axes & Units First

Most mistakes come from misreading:

  • percentages

  • years

  • age groups

  • units (Euro, Stunden, Prozent)

Identify:

  • upward trend (steigt)

  • downward trend (sinkt)

  • stable (bleibt gleich)

  • sudden jumps

  • comparisons between groups

This helps predict correct answers.

3. Identify Extremes

Find:

  • the highest value

  • the lowest value

  • biggest increase

  • biggest decrease

Exam statements often refer to these.

4. Ignore Minor Differences

If 42% and 41% are compared-they are “similar”, not “große Unterschiede”.

Be careful:
Statements like “deutlich mehr” must match big differences.

5. Match Statements Precisely to Numbers

Look out for trap statements:

  • absolute vs relative numbers

  • before vs after year changes

  • wrong percentages (paraphrased incorrectly)

Example trap:
_“Die Zahl hat sich verdoppelt.”
_But graph shows: 40% → 60% (not double).
So the statement is false.
