Concession markers (Einräumungs­konnektoren) allow you to admit one fact while contrasting it with a stronger, opposing point. These connectors are essential for:

1. “Zwar … aber” - Common, Balanced Concession (B1-C1)

Meaning:

• admittedly … but

• indeed … but

• although …

Register:

Structure:

zwar (precedes the weaker point)
aber/jedoch/doch (introduces the stronger contrast)

• Die Wohnung ist zwar klein, doch sehr gemütlich.

Notes:

• “zwar” NEVER stands alone - it always requires “aber/doch/jedoch”.

• Word order stays main-clause order.

2. “Wenngleich” - Formal Subordinate Concession (B2-C1)

Meaning:

• although

• even though

Register:

In the wenngleich-clause, the verb goes to the end (subordinate clause).

Nuance:

Stronger and more formal than obwohl; similar to obgleich.

3. “Gleichwohl” - Very Formal Concessive Adverb (C1)

Meaning:

• nevertheless

• nonetheless

• even so

Register:

Not used in casual conversation.

Structure:

Gleichwohl + inversion (verb in Position 2)

Think of it as the “premium version” of dennoch.
