Nehmen vs. Bekommen — "Take" vs. "Get/Receive" in German

Quick Rule

Are you actively taking/choosing? → nehmen. Are you receiving/getting something given to you? → bekommen.

nehmen vs. bekommen — The Rules

nehmen

"Nehmen" means to take — an active, deliberate action. You reach out and grab/choose something: "Ich nehme den Bus" (I'll take the bus), "Nehmen Sie Platz" (Take a seat).

bekommen

"Bekommen" means to receive/get — you're on the receiving end. Something comes to you: "Ich bekomme ein Geschenk" (I receive a gift). WARNING: It does NOT mean "to become" (that's "werden")!

Examples — Side by Side

Choosing vs. receiving

Ich nehme einen Kaffee, bitte.

I'll have a coffee, please. (ordering/choosing)

Ich bekomme einen Kaffee.

I'm getting/receiving a coffee. (it's being brought to me)

Active taking vs. passive receiving

Nimm dir ein Stück Kuchen.

Take a piece of cake. (help yourself)

Hast du meine E-Mail bekommen?

Did you get/receive my email?

Using vs. being given

Ich nehme den Bus zur Arbeit.

I take the bus to work.

Sie hat eine Gehaltserhöhung bekommen.

She got a raise.

Grabbing vs. earning

Er nimmt sich immer das größte Stück.

He always takes the biggest piece.

Er bekommt immer die besten Noten.

He always gets the best grades.

Common Mistakes

✗

Ich bekomme einen Arzt. (meaning: I become a doctor)

✓

Ich werde Arzt. (I become a doctor) / Ich bekomme einen Termin beim Arzt. (I get a doctor's appointment)

"Bekommen" ≠ "become"! This is the #1 false friend for English speakers. "Become" = "werden".

✗

Using nehmen when something is given to you: "Ich nehme ein Geschenk von ihr."

✓

Ich bekomme ein Geschenk von ihr.

If someone gives you a gift, you "bekommen" (receive) it. "Nehmen" implies you actively took it.

✗

Ich bekomme den Bus. (meaning: I take the bus)

✓

Ich nehme den Bus.

Choosing transportation = "nehmen". You don't "receive" a bus.

Memory Trick

"nehmen" = you reach and take. "bekommen" = it comes to you (be-kommen = something comes to you). NEVER "become" — that's "werden"!
