Week 2: CH and R Sounds Intensive Practice

6 min read

Your complete 7-day program for mastering the hardest German sounds: the two CHs (/ç/ and /x/) and the uvular R (/ʁ/).

If Week 1 gave you clean vowels, Week 2 gives you native-level consonant control.
These two elements (vowels + friction sounds) are 80% of a natural German accent.

Why Week 2 Focuses on CH and R

Because these two sounds:

  • Do not exist in English, Arabic, or Spanish

  • Reveal a foreign accent immediately

  • Require precise airflow, tongue placement, and **mouth shape
    **

  • Appear constantly in everyday German: _ich, auch, Buch, rot, drei, Sprache
    _

Mastering CH and R this week will dramatically upgrade your speaking clarity.

GOAL OF WEEK 2

To build automatic control of:

  • front CH → **ich-Laut (/ç/)
    **
  • back CH → **ach-Laut (/x/)
    **
  • German R → **uvular fricative (/ʁ/)
    **

You will train:
✔️ friction (airflow)
✔️ mouth position
✔️ voicing
✔️ smooth transitions between sounds

Daily commitment: 10-12 minutes.

DAY 1 - Understanding the Two CH Sounds

German has two CH sounds, and using the wrong one instantly sounds “foreign.”

1. Ich-Laut (/ç/)

When? After front vowels: **e, i, ä, ö, ü
**Examples: ich, Licht, Mädchen, Bücher

How it sounds:

Like a soft hiss at the front of your mouth.
NOT: sh (English)
NOT: ch (Arabic/Spanish)

How to make it:
  • Smile slightly

  • Tongue high and close to the hard palate

  • Blow air → friction noise

2. Ach-Laut (/x/)

When? After back vowels: **a, o, u
**Examples: auch, Buch, Loch, Tochter

How it sounds:

Like a soft version of the Arabic “خ”, but WITHOUT voicing.
NOT: harsh
NOT: deep
NOT: voiced

How to make it:
  • Tongue low

  • Air flows in the throat

  • No vibration

Day 1 Practice Words

**Front CH (/ç/):
**ich - sicher - Bücher - Mädchen - Milch

**Back CH (/x/):
**auch - Buch - kochen - lachen - Woche

Do 3 slow repetitions each.

DAY 2 - CH Minimal Pairs Training

Minimal pairs force your brain to hear and produce small differences.

Core Minimal Pairs

  • ich - ach

  • Küche - Kuchen

  • Löcher - Loch

  • Bücher - Buch

  • mich - mach

Say each pair:

  • Slow

  • Medium

  • Natural speed

Listening Technique

Record yourself saying:

ich ach ich ach ich ach

If the two sound nearly the same → repeat slowly and increase contrast.

DAY 3 - The German R: Uvular Fricative /ʁ/

The German R is NOT:

  • the Arabic rolled R

  • the American “er”

  • the English soft R

  • the Spanish trill

It’s a uvular fricative produced in the throat.

How to Make the German R

  • Open your throat

  • Raise the back of your tongue

  • Allow gentle vibration at the uvula

  • Voice the sound lightly

The goal: soft friction, not harsh gargling.

Practice Words

rot
Ratte
Reh
ruhig
Bruder
bereit
Route

Repeat slowly, keeping the R smooth and soft.

DAY 4 - R in Different Positions

German R changes behavior depending on where it appears.

1. R at the Beginning of Words

Strongest form of R.

Examples:
rot, reich, Ruhe, Ritter

Focus: clean uvular friction /ʁ/.

2. R After Vowels

Slightly weaker, but NEVER “er” like English.

Examples:
stärker, Lehrer, Fahrer

Tip: keep vowel strong, then soften the R.

3. R in Unstressed Ending -er

Pronounced like a soft “uh” (ɐ).

Examples:
Wasser → /vasɐ/
besser → /bɛsɐ/
Schüler → /ʃyːlɐ/

Important: Do not roll or overpronounce the R.

Day 4 Practice Sentences

  • **Der Lehrer fährt schnell.
    **
  • **Der Ritter trägt eine Rüstung.
    **
  • **Mein Bruder ist ruhiger geworden.
    **

Record → compare → adjust.

DAY 5 - CH + R Combination Drills

CH and R often appear close together → difficult transitions.

Step-by-Step Method

  • Pronounce CH alone

  • Pronounce R alone

  • Combine slowly

  • Add the rest of the word

Practice Words

durch
Bericht
Kirche
erreichen
nachrichten

Example breakdown: **durch
**du - duʁ - duʁç - durch

This builds muscle memory.

DAY 6 - Accent Neutralization Through Airflow Control

CH and R depend on airflow, not force.

CH Principles

  • No voicing

  • Pure friction

  • Relax your throat for /ç/

  • Narrow throat opening for /x/

R Principles

  • Gentle vibration

  • No rolling

  • Smooth continuous airflow

Breathing Exercise

  • Inhale deeply

  • Exhale slowly saying **/ççççç/
    **

  • Exhale again saying **/ʁʁʁʁʁ/
    **

  • Alternate: /çʁçʁçʁ/

This trains switching without tension.

DAY 7 - Weekly Assessment & Shadowing Routine

Today you lock in what you learned.

Self-Test Checklist

You can:

  • distinguish ich-Laut and ach-Laut

  • produce them automatically in words

  • pronounce German R without rolling

  • soften R in -er endings

  • switch between CH and R smoothly

Shadowing Drill (5 Minutes)

  • Choose a native audio (news clip, YouTube, podcast)

  • Listen once

  • Shadow every sentence immediately

  • Focus on CH and R friction

  • Record your version

  • Compare → adjust → repeat

Calibration Sentences

Say slowly, then naturally:

  • **Ich brauche Bücher für die Recherche.
    **
  • **Der ruhige Lehrer spricht deutlich.
    **
  • **Durch richtige Übung erreicht man schnelle Fortschritte.
    **

These contain multiple CH and R targets.
